Replacing a dryer’s heating element can save you money on expensive repairs and make sure your appliance is running efficiently. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the Whirlpool 5400W heating element (model 279838).

What you'll need:

- Replacement heating element

Step 1: Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet. If you have a gas dryer, be sure to shut off the gas valve leading to the appliance as well.

Step 2: Using the Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws on the back of the dryer that are keeping the back panel in place. Gently pull the back panel away from the dryer.

Step 3: Locate the heating element on the back wall. It will be a cylindrical shape with two elecrodes at either end.

Step 4: Using the socket wrench, unscrew the mounting bolts and slide the old heating element out of its mount.

Step 5: Remove any lint or dust around the furnace with a lint brush. Be sure to clean any other areas that may have accumulated lint.

Step 6: Insert the new heating element into the mount, and use the socket wrench to secure it in place.

Step 7: Replace the back panel of the dryer using the Phillips screwdriver once again.

Step 8: Plug the dryer in and turn it on. Check to make sure the heating element is working properly.
