DIY Guide to Replacing the Goodman Furnace Hot Surface Ignitor

A hot surface ignitor is an essential component of a Goodman furnace. It serves as the spark plug on your furnace, providing the electricity to light the burners. Over time, these components can become worn out, resulting in an inefficient furnace or one that won't turn on at all. Fortunately, replacing a Goodman furnace's hot surface ignitor is a relatively straightforward process that most homeowners can complete themselves. The following is a guide on how to replace the hot surface ignitor in your Goodman furnace.

1. Turn off the power. Before you begin any furnace repair, make sure to turn off the power to the unit. This can usually be done by switching the unit’s breaker to the off position.

2. Remove the access panel. To begin replacing the hot surface ignitor, you must first remove the access panel. On some models, this will require the removal of screws. For others, you may need to press the tabs that hold the panel in place.

3. Locate the old ignitor. Once the panel is removed, you should be able to locate the old ignitor. Typically, it will be attached to two metal wires coming from the furnace.

4. Disconnect the wires. Before you can remove the old ignitor, you must first disconnect the two wires attached to it. Carefully unscrew the nuts that are holding them in place and pull them away from the ignitor.

5. Remove the old ignitor. Next, you will want to remove the old ignitor from the furnace. Depending on the model of your furnace, you may need to remove additional screws. Once you have done this, the ignitor should slide out easily.

6. Attach the new ignitor. Insert the new ignitor into the furnace, making sure it is securely in place. Reattach the two wires and tighten the nuts.

7. Replace the access panel. Finally, reattach the access panel to the furnace, making sure all of the screws are secure.

8. Test the new ignitor. Turn on the power to the furnace and test the new ignitor. After giving it a few moments to warm up, the new ignitor should light and you should be good to go.

Changing the hot surface ignitor in your Goodman furnace is not overly complicated. However if you are ever unsure of what you are doing, it’s always best to consult a certified HVAC technician.
